The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word relentless as “showing or promising no abatement of severity, intensity, strength, or pace”.
That’s a powerful description.
One lesson that you have to learn in life before you succeed at anything, is that success requires the ability to be relentless.
Relentless in your actions. Relentless in your effort. Relentless in your ability to keep going.
It’s one of the first lessons discussed in the great classic, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill.
Successful people don’t get to where they are because they quit.
They get to where they are and beyond because they have developed the ability to hold on and persevere despite all the adversity they face.
I have found that hearing words spoken from those who have come before us are one of the most powerful ways to understand the essence of a lesson.
The 10 powerful quotes about being relentless below embody the definition and spirit of the word relentless. They will help you charge your battery up again to get and keep going not matter what!
# 1- “It looks like a waste of life, that mowing down of our best years by a relentless passion which itself falls dead on the top of them. But it is not so. Every year I live I am more convinced that the waste of life lies in the love we have not given, the powers we have not used, the selfish prudence which will risk nothing, and which, shirking pain, misses happiness as well. No one ever yet was the poorer in the long run for having once in a lifetime ‘let out all the length of the reins.'” -- Mary Cholmondeley
When we are going through the trials and tribulations that must come when we pursue something great, we often wonder if we are wasting our time.
“Why can’t I just satisfied with what I have and ease up on my desire to do more”, I ask myself often.
I’ve worried at times whether I was wasting my time and life pursuing something that might not matter in the long run.
The truth is that it’s the ones which do not dare that end up wasting their lives.
They will get to their end of their life and be filled with regret about all the things they could have done but chose not to.
Regret is one thing in your life that you do not want to live with.
If you pursue something that you love 100 % regardless of the outcome, you will have lived a life worth living.
# 2- “Do. The. Work. Every day, you have to do something you don’t want to do. Every day. Challenge yourself to be uncomfortable, push past the apathy and laziness and fear. Otherwise, the next day you’re going to have two things you don’t want to do, then three and four and five, and pretty soon, you can’t even get back to the first thing. And then all you can do is beat yourself up for the mess you’ve created, and now you’ve got a mental barrier to go along with the physical barriers.”
― Tim S. Grover
In his book Relentless: From Good to Great to Unstoppable, Grover talks about the mind sets of some of the greatest athletes we’ve ever seen. He was Michael Jordan’s personal trainer, so he is definitely qualified to speak on the subject.
Being relentless means that you keep pushing no matter what.
It can be so easy to let a day of laziness turn into two days of laziness. Before you know it, weeks have gone by and you are so far off course you don’t know how to get back.
To be successful with something, you are going to have to do so many things on a daily basis that you don’t enjoy.
That’s the price of success. It’s not all fun and games. Far from it.
Whatever it is that you’re doing, do something to get better at it every day. Even if it’s something small.
Overtime those small actions will add up.
# 3- “My greatest point is my persistence. I never give up in a match. However down I am, I fight until the last ball. My list of matches shows that I have turned a great many so-called irretrievable defeats into victories.” -- Bjorn Borg
The simple fact is that those who remain persistent and relentless get what they want.
I know some of you reading this will immediately make some objection about some time you didn’t get what you want to try to prove to yourself that it’s not true.
Deep inside yourself however, you know that it’s true.
History has proven time and time again that people who do not quit get what they want.
Going hard at something for two weeks and then quitting because you aren’t getting any results is not persistence.
It took Thomas Edison 10,000 times to perfect the light bulb. Let that number sink in for a second.
Are you willing to go that far in pursuit of greatness?
I know that many of you aren’t. I won’t judge you at all if that’s the case but do not ever say that persistence is not the key to success.
# 4- “People of mediocre ability sometimes achieve outstanding success because they don’t know when to quit. Most men succeed because they are determined to.” -- George Allen
Most people think that those who are able to accomplish great things have some special ability that others don’t.
Perhaps they were blessed with more talent or better looks, but more often than that it’s the willingness to keep going until they win that propels them to great heights.
When you start something, you need to tell yourself that you will keep trying and keep going until you succeed.
If you don’t do that, you are going to find it very easy to quit at the first bump in the road.
When you take the option of quitting away from yourself, you have no other choice but to keep going.
# 5- “When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you, till it seems as though you could not hang on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn.” -- Harriet Beecher Stowe
I have repeated this quote to myself many times over the years.
There are so many opportunities and urges to quit along the way with anything.
Over and over again I’ve asked myself whether it was worth it to keep going and over and over again I told myself that it was.
You know what happened every time I did that? I elevated myself to another level and strengthened my resolve.
It made it much harder to quit at the next bump in the road.
Once you’ve faced a few of these bumps and find the power to keep going, you find that it’s almost always worth it and things improve.
Your commitment grows and you find a whole new strength inside of yourself.
# 6-“Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever.” -- Lance Armstrong
This is probably the most famous quote by Lance Armstrong. He could have quit many times and chose not to.
Whatever issue you are facing is temporary. Whether it’s rejection, or failure, depression. Whatever it is. It too will pass.
There are waves that you go through with any endeavor. It’s a wild roller coaster ride of ups and downs.
You only find out how high the ups will go however, when you stick with it.
Once you quit that’s it. It’s all over.
You never know what you might have been or may have accomplished.
# 7- “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time”. -Thomas A. Edison
What kind of quote post would this be without a quote from the king of relentless himself?
Embedded within this quote is a powerful trick that I’ve used time and time again.
When you want to quit something but know that you shouldn’t, just tell yourself that you will try one more time.
You don’t have to say that you will try 10,000 times. Your mind can’t process that.
If you fail the next time, you know what you tell yourself? That’s right. You will try just one more time.
You keep telling yourself this and keep going until you get where you want.
All it takes is one more time.
# 8- “Life has two rules: #1-Never quit. #2-Always remember rule # 1.”- Unknown
I really wish I knew who said this beautiful quote so I could give the badass some credit.
I think that this quote sums up this entire post as succinctly as possible.
The habit of quitting is like a cancer.
Once it starts, it spreads to everything.
You may start out quitting small things, but by the end you will surely move on to quitting big things.
Once you start quitting, it gets easier and easier every time you do it.
The more you do it, the harder it is to stop doing it.
You have to tell yourself that you will never quit no matter what.
It really has to be this serious.
# 9- “Most great people have achieved their greatest success just one step beyond their greatest failure.” Napoleon Hill
This is quote from Think and Grow Rich.
If you want to desire a burning desire in yourself to keep going no matter what then you need to buy that book and read it over and over.
Of all the books I’ve read, it is by far the most helpful when it comes to understanding the importance of perseverance and being relentless.
There was a time in my life when I read it once a week for many weeks and my thinking has never been the same since.
When you study successful people, you will often find that they had gone through some massive failure just before they found success.
It’s almost like there is a force in the universe that finally allows you to succeed once you’ve proven that you will keep going no matter what.
When you learn to become relentless with your pursuit of greatness, you will meet this force face to face. Trust me.
# 10- “Age wrinkles the body. Quitting wrinkles the soul.” -Douglas MacArthur
I remember finding this quote in high school.
I can’t remember where I first found it, but it’s always stuck in my mind and popped up when I most needed it.
Quotes are funny like that. You file them away in your mental file cabinet and your soul pulls them out when you most need them.
There are few things you will regret in life as much as quitting on something.
I firmly believe that your soul absorbs the pain of quitting and never forgets it.
It brings it up randomly as you go through life.
You’ll be having a good day and out of nowhere your mind will say “remember that time you quit x and y?”.
You know that it’s true.
Quitting stays with you forever.
Make the decision
Make the decision right now that you will be a relentless person.
Tell yourself that you will be relentless in your pursuits and never allow the desire to quit to beat you.
When you are relentless, you look at life in a completely different way.
You know that you will succeed. It’s just a matter of when.
Once you become relentless, you develop a super-human quality that can only be developed by refusing to quit.
I sincerely hope that these quotes help you develop the desire to keep going and keep trying no matter what.
I can promise that it will be worth it in the end.
