I know you’re thinking I’ve lost my mind a little after reading the title.
A supplement blog potentially saying that supplements aren’t the answer?
No way right?
Well that’s exactly what I’m saying.
From day one, I never told or promised you that supplements were the answer to your fitness or bodybuilding needs.
They are certainly a piece to a somewhat complicated puzzle, but they aren’t everything.
Allow me to explain why supplements aren’t the answer you’re looking for.
Supplements aren’t steroids
A few days ago, I was listening to the same conversation between a
few friends that I’ve heard at least 100 different times over the
years between various people.
It’s the standard “what supplements are you taking?” question.
As I listened to this group of people talk about the new cutting age supplements they’re taking from the popular new brand, a few things came to mind.
One friend in particular was talking about this high-priced carbohydrate powder he bought for some unknown reason.
While he was singing the praises of it, I struggled to hold back from telling him how ridiculous he sounded.
This particular friend has horrific sleeping habits and has zero diet plan or structure whatsoever.
On top of that he trains sporadically and chooses bizarre exercises when he does actually lift.
As long as I’ve known him, he’s had very few gains of any kind and is not receptive to advice.
I think you can probably see where I’m going with this.
This guy is spending upwards of $60.00 a month on this supplement, but fails to do even the basic tasks required of him to build a good physique.
He’s just throwing his money down the drain.
This supplement isn’t going to help him very much.
It could be the greatest supplement in the world, but without consistently working out and eating right, it’s going to do very little.
Supplements are not steroids. Sounds dumb, but I think a lot of people get confused.
They will not help you to pack muscle on if you ignore all the other principles of bodybuilding.
They supplement your diet and training program. That’s it.
Now you can get great results from a lot of supplements, but you have to have a strong foundation first.
Foundation first, supplements second
The basic foundation to building a great body is a great diet and great training program.
If you don’t have those two things dialed in, forget about the supplements.
Think of it like a house. The foundation is the most important part. It keeps all the other parts together and standing.
It’s the same thing with bodybuilding.
Unfortunately, too many people think they can skip building a great foundation and jump a few steps ahead by taking the hot new supplement.
Doesn’t work that way.
No matter what a supplement company tells you, their product will never be worth much to you if you are eating like crap and not training.
Now if you have taken the time to learn how to diet properly and are actually doing it while training consistently hard, then supplements can help you tremendously.
Supplements don’t replace hard work
The bottom line is that you need to put the damn work in.
I’ve been dumb enough in my life several times to think taking a certain supplement would allow me to slack in other areas.
I remember thinking fat burners were a miracle solution back in the day which was pretty far from the actual truth.
The hardest part about being in this space is battling the negative opinion people have of supplements.
So many companies and misguided people have perpetuated this myth that supplements are the answer.
Guess what happens?
People believe that, go and buy these supplements without putting the work in and get zero results.
What do they say then? “All supplements are a waste of money”. But of course.
It’s upsetting because it’s not the truth.
Many are, but many aren’t.
The problem is that the person taking the supplement was too lazy to figure out how to train right and eat right to give the supplement a chance to work.
Could the supplement still have been total garbage? Of course, which is why you always do your research first.
But I see people on social media bashing all supplements and it’s stupid and misguided.
Don’t rush into supplements
Again, probably not what you’d expect someone running a supplement blog to say.
If I told every new lifter or bodybuilder that came here that they needed to start taking certain supplements right away, I’d definitely get more sales.
That doesn’t make it right though.
I’m always honest with everything I put into this blog as I promised to do from day one.
If you aren’t getting any results, supplements aren’t your problem.
You need to take a hard look at your diet and training program. That’s where your problem is.
When you have those two things down, then you should start looking at a few supplements to boost your results and make your life easier.
Supplements will never make up for a bad diet or poor training program.
Stopping think they’re the answer
This is a point I’ve made a few times, but I wanted to clarify my thoughts on it.
Nothing makes me more upset to hear someone going on and on about certain supplements that can’t even get into the gym consistently or eat right.
Because, after a while that person comes to the false conclusion that all supplements are crap.
Supplements are small part to the answer, but they are not the answer.
Even steroids are not the answer.
A ton of people I know take steroids that have laughingly bad results because they can’t eat right or hit the gym.
Diet and a quality training program will always be your foundation that needs to be mastered before looking at other options.
Don’t take the easy way out and think there’s some magical pill or powder out there.
There isn’t and you’re not going to find it.
It’s up to you to do the monotonous daily work of eating right and training hard.
